Big Ugly Brewing is a brewery and taproom on South Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake. It opened in 2015, and its website calls it Chesapeake's first microbrewery. The name comes from a co-founder's 1955 Chevy panel truck, nicknamed Big Ugly.
The menu has grown from 4 beers on opening day to more than 20. Flagships include Rockers IPA, a West Coast IPA, and Sunbeam Blonde. Lite B.U.B. is a light American lager, and Peake Lager is dry hopped.
The 6,000 square foot building leaves the brewing equipment in view, with a mezzanine, a large patio and a big front yard. Food trucks park out front most days. Taxus Street Coffee, a local roaster, runs a coffee shop inside on weekday and Saturday mornings.
The week is full of poker, trivia, vinyl nights, a run club and live music. Kids are welcome with an adult, and dogs are welcome on a leash. More people have reviewed Big Ugly on Google than any other brewery, taproom or beer shop in Chesapeake on this site.
