About Genesee Beer & Ale
Genesee Beer & Ale is a Rochester brewery from The Genesee Brewing Company, which dates to 1878. Genesee calls itself the oldest brewery in New York State and one of the largest and oldest continually operating breweries in the country. FIFCO USA owns it today and has relit the iconic Genesee Beer & Ale sign.
The story starts when Mathius Kondolf bought the Reisky & Spies brewery and renamed it The Genesee Brewery. Prohibition closed it in 1919, and Louis Wehle later bought it with profits from his baking business. The new Genesee Brewing Company was incorporated in 1932.
Year-round classics include Genesee Beer, Genesee Light, Genesee Cream Ale and Genesee N.A. The website says Genesee Cream Ale has been the style standard since it was first brewed in 1960. Seasonal and specialty brews include Genesee Summer Brew, Genesee Ruby Red Kolsch and 12 Horse Ale.
The original Genesee is brewed with two-row barley malt, corn grits and hops from the Yakima Valley. Genesee N.A. is brewed with six-row barley malt and cold aged.
