Black Rabbit Mead Company is a meadery and bar in the Brewery District of East Downtown Reno. It calls itself Nevada's first meadery. The meads are made with honey sourced from the Sierra Nevadas.
Black Rabbit makes cider-style meads that are carbonated, semi-dry and gluten-free, often infused with fruits, herbs or spices. The website says they are often described as a cross between beer and cider. That is drier than traditional mead, which is usually served like a sweet wine.
Two local high school teachers, Jake and Will, founded the company. They caught the mead bug when another teacher, Al from Al's Bees, offered them honey and a mead making kit if they would split the bottles.
The full bar specializes in locally sourced drinks and also serves savory hand pies and non-alcoholic options. Live music, community events and private parties all happen at the bar.
