Massachusetts is a big brewery state with no single center. Boston holds only about a tenth of the places listed, and Worcester and Plymouth add just a little more. The rest are spread across well over a hundred cities and towns, from Cambridge and Somerville to Greenfield and Westfield.
Most places listed are breweries, and beer stores make up about an eighth. Where size is known, microbreweries lead, followed by brewpubs and a solid group of regional breweries.
Samuel Adams Boston Brewery in Jamaica Plain is the original Sam Adams brewery, with a draft menu that rotates through its innovation brewhouse. Harpoon Brewery runs a working brewery and beer hall in the Seaport District. Trillium Brewing Company opened in Fort Point and still pours there, with a patio and a roof deck.

Boston makes the easiest base, since more breweries sit there than in any other city in the state. Cambridge and Somerville each add a few more.
Beyond Boston the list spreads across many towns, so plan each stop ahead. Tree House Brewing Company in Charlton, Jack's Abby Craft Lagers in Framingham and Northampton Brewery are among the most reviewed in the state.
