Deft Brewing is a brewery on Banks Street in San Diego, just north of Old Town off Morena Boulevard. Its founders, Morris Nuspl and Kevin Malik, built the taproom around European beer styles instead of the West Coast IPA that dominates most local lists. With 15 taps, only two or three are usually IPAs, and the rest lean into German, Belgian and British styles you don't see as often around San Diego.
The lineup rotates often, so the board changes most times you visit. Recent taps have included a Leichtes Helles, a Belgian tripel called Bruxelles Trip, a Scottish export served on cask, and porters and pils in the German tradition.
Deft shares its patio with neighbors Lost Cause Meadery, Oddish Wines and Pizza Cassette. Together they call it The Garten, a space with hop gardens and a stage for live music, trivia and game nights through the week.
Pizza Cassette runs the kitchen on-site with wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches and salads, open Tuesday through Sunday. Deft and The Garten are family-friendly and dog-friendly, so bring the kids and a leashed dog along with the crew.
