Anchorage anchors the Alaska beer map. Close to a third of the state's breweries sit there, and Fairbanks holds about one in seven. Add Juneau, and just over half of them are in those three cities.
The rest are spread among smaller towns, from Wasilla and Palmer to Skagway, Seward and Homer. Nearly every place listed is a working brewery. Where size is known, most are small microbreweries or brewpubs.
Midnight Sun Brewing Co. in south Anchorage has a tasting room and a full restaurant, and Google notes weekly brewery tours. Anchorage Brewing Company leans on mixed culture sours, coolship saisons and big barrel-aged beers. 49th State Brewing - Anchorage fills a downtown building that began as an Elks Lodge.
Planning a brewery trip in Alaska
Anchorage makes the easiest base, since more breweries cluster there than anywhere else in the state. Fairbanks is the next best pick, and Juneau, Wasilla and Palmer each have a few stops of their own.
