Michigan is a big brewery state, and its beer map has two main hubs. Detroit and Grand Rapids hold roughly the same share, with Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor and Traverse City next. Even so, the top three cities account for only about a sixth of the list, and the rest reach more than two hundred towns, from Holland and Muskegon to Marquette.
Where size is known, brewpubs outnumber microbreweries, so plenty of these places serve food with their own beer. Beer stores make up nearly a fifth of the places listed.
Detroit Beer Co. brews in the historic Hartz Building, steps from Comerica Park and Ford Field. Atwater Brewery & Tap House pours in Rivertown, the Detroit neighborhood where Atwater was born. In Grand Rapids, Founders Brewing Co and Brewery Vivant are among the most reviewed breweries in the state.
Planning a brewery trip in Michigan
Detroit and Grand Rapids make the easiest bases, since the most breweries cluster in those two cities. Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor are good picks too, and Traverse City and Holland each have a group of their own.
Many stops are brewpubs, so a brewery visit can double as lunch or dinner. Beyond the big cities the breweries spread out, so plan your stops before you set out.
