Monnik Beer Company is a brewery and restaurant in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood of Louisville. It opened in 2015 in the old Heitzman's Bakery building at the corner of Burnett Avenue and Hickory Street, which dates to 1924. Monnik is the Dutch word for monk, a nod to the focus the owners bring to the work.
The flagship beers lean European, with Italian Disco pilsner, Eagle Skull saison, Hauck's American Pilsner and King George brown ale. The rotating taps run from Oktoberfest lagers to a barrel aged doppelbock. The bar also mixes its own house cocktails.
The kitchen is a real draw. Chef Kathryn Fink builds seasonal comfort food from local ingredients, like fried smelts, local grass-fed burgers, mussels and fries and braised lamb. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are marked on the menu.
The event space hosts parties, weddings, business meetings and concerts, with full catering. More people have reviewed Monnik on Google than any other brewery, taproom or beer shop in Louisville on this site.
