Illinois is a big brewery state, and Chicago carries a large part of it. The city holds nearly a quarter of the breweries on its own. No other city comes close, and the rest are spread across a long list of suburbs and small towns.
Springfield, Plainfield and Peoria each have a small group, and Evanston, Rock Island and Belleville add more. Most places listed are breweries, with a few beer stores and brewpubs. Where size is known, microbreweries lead, and brewpubs make up a large share too.
Cobra Lounge on North Ashland Avenue pours beer from All Rise Brewery, which its website calls its in-house brewery. Open Outcry Brewing Company on the South Side takes its name from the trading floor. Goose Island Taproom on West Fulton Street has other breweries a short walk away.
Planning a brewery trip in Illinois
Chicago makes the easiest base by far, since more breweries cluster there than anywhere else in the state. West Fulton Street is a good place to start, with other breweries close by.
Outside the city, Springfield, Plainfield and Peoria each have stops of their own. Plan your route before you set out, since the rest are spread out.
