California Wild Ales OB is the Ocean Beach taproom of a San Diego brewery that calls itself the city's sour house. This Newport Avenue room is where the company began. It was built from reclaimed and donated materials, with a roll-up window, sidewalk seats and a purple and turquoise storefront.
Sour beer is still the heart of it. The Ocean Beach board runs 16 taps, with foeder-aged sours and barrel-aged tart saisons next to a crisp lager, an amber, a dark Japanese lager and West Coast and hazy IPAs. There are gluten-free hard seltzers and house micheladas too.
The barrels live at the company's second site in Midway and Point Loma, about five minutes away. Ocean Beach is the neighborhood taproom where those releases pour until they kick.
Walk in with your dog, since there are no reservations. Thursday brings trivia at 7pm, and Tuesday nights bring radio bingo.
