New Jersey spreads its breweries very thin. Well over a hundred towns have at least one, and no city holds more than a small slice. Jersey City leads, followed by Hammonton, Toms River and Red Bank.
Most places listed are breweries, and where size is known, most are small microbreweries. Beer stores make up about one in eight. A few brewpubs and beer gardens round out the list.
Departed Soles Brewing Company in Jersey City is known for gluten free beer, brewed in dedicated tanks. Zeppelin Hall Beer Garden, also in Jersey City, seats guests at long community tables. In downtown Newark, Newark Local Beer offers daily tours and is easy to reach by mass transit.
Planning a brewery trip in New Jersey
Jersey City makes the easiest base, with the largest group of stops in one place. Hammonton, Toms River and Red Bank each have a small cluster of their own.
