Breweries in Maryland

Maryland spreads its breweries across a long list of towns, and no city dominates. Baltimore leads with about a tenth. Gaithersburg, Rockville, Frederick, Silver Spring and Germantown each hold a similar share.

Beer stores are a big part of the picture here, at roughly two fifths of the places listed. Breweries make up just over half, with a few brewpubs and beer gardens. Where size is known, most breweries are microbreweries, and brewpubs come next.

Union Craft Brewing in Baltimore sits inside the Union Collective, a former Sears warehouse. Wet City in Mount Vernon takes its name as a nod to Prohibition. Nepenthe Brewing Co. on Falls Road keeps its taproom busy with a weekly calendar that includes team trivia.

Planning a brewery trip in Maryland

Baltimore makes the easiest base, since more breweries cluster there than anywhere else in the state. Gaithersburg, Rockville, Silver Spring and Germantown work well too, and Frederick has plenty of stops of its own.
