Delaware packs its breweries into a short list of towns. Wilmington holds close to a fifth of them, and Newark and Middletown follow. Those three cities account for about two fifths, and the rest sit in places like Milton, Lewes, Dover and Rehoboth Beach.
Brewpubs set the tone here. Where size is known, they outnumber microbreweries, and about a tenth of the places listed are beer gardens. Almost everything else is a brewery.
Dogfish Head Milton Brewery in Milton is one of the most reviewed breweries in the state. Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant draws plenty of reviews in both Wilmington and Newark. Big Oyster Brewery in Lewes and Midnight Oil Brewing Company in Newark are popular stops too.
Planning a brewery trip in Delaware
Wilmington makes the easiest base, since more breweries cluster there than anywhere else in the state. Newark and Middletown are good picks too, each with a group of stops.
Milton and Lewes each have stops of their own, and Rehoboth Beach, Milford and Ocean View add more. Plan your stops before you drive, so you know which ones are open.
