New Helvetia Brewing Company is a brewery and taproom on Broadway in Sacramento. Its website calls it a community brewery that celebrates Sacramento's history. The name comes from the original name of the settlement John Sutter founded here in 1839.
The brewery was inspired by the old Buffalo Brewing Company, established in 1890. New Helvetia introduced Buffalo Craft Lager as a homage to it. Its website says the taproom holds maps, posters and a display case of Buffalo Beer artifacts, plus a carved wooden buffalo head named Thurston.
The beer is brewed on site. You can see the brewhouse through the windows of the tasting room or the glass doors near the courtyard. The taproom has booths and benches and a standing bar with no bar stools, and the shaded Courtyard Biergarten outside welcomes dogs.
Food comes from Jim Denny's, which the website lists as the kitchen at New Helvetia. Trivia and bingo run on Thursday nights.
